What: Ecomagination serves as the commitment of General Electric (GE) to the belief that financial and environmental performance can drive company growth.
When: Plans to grow revenues from products providing significant environmental performance advantages to customers to over $20 billion in 2010, and grow its research dollars in cleaner technologies from $700 million in 2005 to $1.5 billion in 2010.
How: By providing many different types of products dealing with water, transportation, lighting, for the home, energy, and automotive, GE's products represent how technological innovation can minimize environmental impact . For example, GE utilizes photovoltaic technology in a Roof Integrated Tile system to add solar energy to homes.
Other contributions: For water, Ecomagination's role in advancing water reuse and purification resulted in an advanced membrane technology. An example of Ecomagination's role in transportation includes the China Mainline Evolution locomotive, which reduces emissions and runs more efficiently than other locomotives in China. Over 90% of its compact florescent light bulbs are energy star qualified. These simply serve as examples of the many innovative products that take advantage of environmental technologies .
Larry Ellison
What: Larry Ellison successfully developed the Oracle relational database management system.
When: Oracle Corporation began operation in 1977 after changing its name from Software Development Laboratories to Oracle.
How: Creating the database gives users the ability to access data and change it into information. The database replaced paper filing, increasing the accuracy, accessibility, and the speed of data processing.
Other Contributions: Oracle led by , Larry Ellison, produced ProfitLogic and I-flex to manage data in retail and banking.
IsoRay Medical
What: IsoRay Medical provides cesium-131 cancer treatment , representing an additional prostate cancer treatment option .
When: Seed brachytherapy resulted from scientific research that started in the 1960's. Cesium-131 received FDA clearance to market the product in 2003 and the first Cesium-131 seed brachytherapy started at the University of Washington Medical Center on October 2004.
How: By serving as an alternative prostate cancer treatment , cancer victims have an additional therapy option to radical prostatectomy, external beam radiation therapy, cryosurgery, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and watchful waiting.
